Abstract
Introduction: Notifiable diseases are of public health importance due to their epidemic potential, requiring control and prevention strategies. Influenza, in particular, due to its high transmission capacity and global impact, is of great epidemiological importance.
Objectives: To analyze the seasonal distribution and determine the prevalence of influenza among patients aged between 20 and 59 years of age who were seen at the Hospital Regional del Instituto de Previsión Social of Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, in the outpatient, emergency, and inpatient sectors of the internal medical service, between January and August 2024.
Methodology: A retrospective cross-sectional descriptive epidemiological study was carried out using data collected from epidemiological records.
Results: The records of 363 patients were reviewed, 52 (14.3%) tested positive for influenza infection. Of the total number of positive cases, 44 (84.6%) were identified as type A influenza and 8 (15.4%) as type B influenza. An increase in the number of cases was observed from April onwards. It was found that 28.8% of those affected were health care professionals.
Conclusion: The prevalence of influenza was 14.3%, affecting almost one-third of health care professionals.
